At the Route to Food Initiative (RTFI), we believe that every person has the right to adequate, sufficient, and healthy food. This is not just a policy statement; it is a fundamental human right. Achieving this right requires collective action and the combined efforts of allies and partners from various sectors. Together, we strive to influence food systems that respect both human rights and the environment.
Our approach to policy advocacy is rooted in collaboration. We work alongside farmer groups, civil society organizations, government officials, and other stakeholders to create meaningful change in Kenya’s food systems. Through these partnerships, we aim to ensure that the needs and voices of farmers and communities are represented in policies that affect their food security and sovereignty.
One of the significant milestones in our advocacy work was the submission of Petition 70 of 2019 to the National Assembly. This petition, supported by a wide range of civil society groups, called for the withdrawal of highly hazardous pesticides from Kenya’s market, given their adverse effects on both human health and the environment. Submitting the petition led to a cascade of various actions, reactions and dialogues that continues to shape the synthetic pesticides space in Kenya.
Additionally, we are working directly with farmers to amplify their voices at the county level. In Nakuru, Kiambu, and Kimana, we support smallholder farmers who are now engaging their county governments on Agroecology and food systems policies. Learn more about our collaborations.
