Alliance Pledge

Joining the Route to Food Alliance means you are part of an initiative to realise the Right to Food in Kenya. The reason we exist is to create a network of like-minded people from government, media, civil society, academia, farmers and the private sector who want to work together to end food insecurity in the country.

As a member of the alliance, you endorse the Alliance Pledge.

  1. I recognise that food security is a human right, enshrined in Article 43 of the Constitution of Kenya; where every man, woman and child has the right to be free from hunger and have food of acceptable quality.
  2. I strongly object to leaders who use food or food aid as a political tool.
  3. I support gender inclusive legislative reform that strengthens the position of women – as equals to men – in the agricultural, livestock and fisheries sectors.
  4. I support leaders who promote Kenya’s food sovereignty by contributing to local, small-scale food value chain by prioritising the participation of men and women, the elderly and youth who suffer from chronic food insecurity.
  5. I understand that hunger and undernourishment is a chronic problem. Therefore, I support forward-planning collaboration between the necessary Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) as a critical step in addressing an ongoing problem.
  6. I support food production and consumer laws, policies and practices that are socially, environmentally and economically sound. To this end, I object to solutions advocating the use of genetically modified organisms, synthetic fertilisers and pesticides.
  7. My commitment to this pledge means I will take part in discussions about food and food security. I will ask questions about simplified explanations of why so many Kenyans are hungry, cannot afford food, or cannot access safe food. I will argue against the assertion that Kenya is food secure.
  8. I will use my knowledge, skills, position, social networks and other means I have at my disposal, to actively contribute to achieving the Human Right to Food.
